For centuries, India has grappled with the regular occurrence of floods and droughts. Floods and droughts, among the most concrete and devastating outcomes of the climate crisis, are now increasingly affecting communities worldwide.

Safe drinking water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) is the basic need for leading a healthy and dignified life. Marginalised communities in India still struggle with waterborne diseases, mostly due to unsafe drinking water and WASH behavior. According to a Joint Monitoring Program (JMP) Report by WHO in 2021, two billion people across the globe lack safely managed WASH services.

As I embarked on my agtech and water tour in India, I was surprised to experience such a diverse range of extreme climates in just one month. I travelled from drought-stricken landscapes in North India (early June 2023) to flood-ravaged regions while leaving the country (early July 2023) and encountered uneven weather patterns in between.

Intermittent water distribution networks can be varied and complicated

India is home to a thriving community of pastoralists whose lifestyles represent one of the oldest and most sustainable systems. These herders practice mobility, moving their livestock from one climatic region to another every year in search of adequate food, suitable pastures, and grasslands.
