वनों में जलवायु परिवर्तन को कम करने की महत्त्वपूर्ण क्षमता होती है। वनीकरण द्वारा जलवायु परिवर्तन को कम किया जा सकता है। पौधे एवं वनस्पतियाँ प्रकाश संश्लेषण के माध्यम से कार्बन डाईऑक्साइड में कमी लाते हैं, साथ ही मृदा भी पौधों और जीवों से निकलने वाले जैविक कार्बन को रोके रखती है। मृदा में कार्बन की मात्रा भूमि के उपयोग, खेती के प्रकारों, मृदा के पोषण तथा तापमान पर निर्भर करती है।
