स्वच्छ जलस्रोतों में विलयित या निलंबित वाह्य पदार्थ, अशुद्धियां मिल जाती हैं, जिससे जल के गुणों में परिवर्तन हो जाता है। यह जल उपयोग करने लायक न रह कर स्वास्थ्य के लिए हानिकारक बन जाता है। इसे 'जल प्रदूषण' कहते हैं। ये वाह्य पदार्थ मल-मूत्र, रसायन, उर्वरक, कीटनाशक एवं औद्योगिक अपशिष्ट हो सकते हैं। निरंतर बहने वाली नदियों में शहरी कूड़ा करकट या अनुपचारित मलजल का लगातार मिलते रहना; झीलो
