`चाल’ सामान्य अर्थ में सिर्फ वाटर टैंक नहीं हुआ करते थे। पहाड़ों पर यह पानी को सहेजने का एक तरीका हुआ करता था। पर अब चाल-खाल गायब हो रहे हैं। इसके साथ ही गायब हो रही है पहाड़ की पारंपरिक जल प्रबंधन की व्यवस्था। जाहिर है, आगे की कहानी त्रासद है।

जाली करंज असल में लालबाग में ऐसा संगम है जहाँ सूखा भण्डारा, मूल भंडारा और चिंताहरण का जल आकर एकत्र होता था। मुगलकाल में ‘जाली करंज’ से बुरहानपुर को पानी प्रदाय किया जाता था। यह पानी पकी मिट्टी और तराशे गये पत्थर के पाइपों के जरिये नगर के विभिन्न करंजों और वाटर टावरों में पहुंचाया जाता था। पानी के दबाव से पकी मिट्टी के पाइप फट न जायें इसलिए इन पाइपों के आसपास चूना, गारा और ईंट की मोटी चिनाई कर द
