The January edition of the TRINet has the following highlights:

People’s institutions for improving water and sanitation services - A video showing the experiences of Jankapet village in Andhra Pradesh in improving the water supply in the village

This video narrates the fascinating story of the active role played by a village water committee in Jankampet, Andhra Pradesh, in improving the water supply system and living upto the expectations of communities. Established way back in 1996, the village has had 16 committees till now and its functioning shows that the sustainability of the institution is ensured as it is considered as people's institutions.

About Swaniti

Swaniti is an apolitical initiative that strives to build a better India by creating civically oriented opportunities for talented and passionate youth in governance and polity. The organization works with leaders across the political spectrum to identify issues in their constituency and recruits dynamic youth to design and implement solutions to overcome these challenges.

About the fellowship

Swaniti believes in a government by the people, people should be at the core. Hence the Swaniti Fellowships aims to engage the brightest youth in the country in governance by launching them in constituency development engagements, thereby involving them in development and governance.

Swaniti provides mentoring to the Fellows to enable them to successfully complete their fellowship. The mentoring is in the form of pre-fellowship training; setting expectations and supplying the Fellows with necessary resources such as research support, sector specific guidance and trouble-shooting during the Fellowship. Throughout the engagement, Fellows are expected to work with the support of the Swaniti team to meet the deliverables.

"Arghyam prepares Water Quality Management (WQM) framework for rural areas" - Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation releases its first e-newsletter on water and sanitation in India (December 2012)

This first e-newsletter, launched by the Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, titled - 'Swajal Nirmal Bharat' begins with a renewed focus on the achievement of sanitation outcomes. It discusses the Working Group’s review of the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC), now called the Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan (NBA) or the Clean India Campaign and its suggested strategies, priorities, and allocation for implementation in the 12th Five Year Plan. It talks on how the new strategy is aimed at transforming rural India into ‘Nirmal Bharat’ by adopting the community saturation approach.

The newsletter refers to the nationwide campaign carried out by Arghyam, with the aim of creating awareness on water quality issues with a specific focus on fluoride contamination in groundwater sources, by engaging students from across the country in a water quality testing, analysis, and reporting.

The simultaneous attainment of financial, environmental and social sustainability of urban services is an important requirement of development. Given the huge investments that are being made in the improvement of urban infrastructure and services in India, it is of the utmost importance that these investments are made in a manner that brings about the greatest good of the greatest number in a sustainable manner. Within urban infrastructure the supply of water and its disposal after use in cities has become one of the most problematic aspects of planning and management.

बांदा, जखनी गांव : आज भी खरी है मेड़बंदी

मनुष्य को जब से भोजन की आवश्यकता पड़ी होगी उसने भोजन का आविष्कार किया होगा। किस स्थान पर भोजन उगाया जाए? फसलें पैदा की जाएं जमीन खोजी होगी खेत बनाया होगा। खाद्यान्न पैदा करने के लिए खेत का निर्माण तय हुआ होगा तभी से मेड़बंदी जैसी जल संरक्षण की विधि का आविष्कार हुआ होगा। यह हमारे पुरखों की विधि है जिन से खेत खलिहान का जन्म हुआ है एवं जिन्होंने जल संरक्षण परंपरागत प्रमाणित सर्वमान्य मेड़बंदी विधि का आविष्कार किया है जिसमें किसी प्रकार की कोई तकनीकी शिक्षा नवीन-ज्ञान, वैज्ञानिक ज्ञान की आवश्यकता नहीं होती है।

उत्तर कोरिया सरकार ने मानव मल एकत्र करने के लिए आदेश क्यों दिया है

उत्तर कोरिया के तानाशाह किम जोंग उन के एक नए आदेश के बारे में जानना चाहिए कि उन्होंने कोरिया की जनता से 10 किलोग्राम मानव मल एकत्र करने का आदेश दिया है। ताकि उसे खाद के रूप में इस्तेमाल किया जा सके। हालांकि यह आदेश उत्तर कोरियाई लोगों के लिए पूरी तरह से नया नहीं है, क्योंकि वे पहले से ही सर्दियों में खाद के रूप में मानव मल का उपयोग करते आए हैं।
