बेहिसाब भूजल दोहन भूकंप के खतरे को विनाशकारी बना देगा। हाल फिलहाल के दो अध्ययन हमारे लिए खतरे का संकेत दे रहे हैं। एक अध्ययन पूर्वी हिमालयी क्षेत्र में भूकंप के आवृत्ति और तीब्रता बढ़ने की बात कर रहा है। तो दूसरा भूजल का अत्यधिक दोहन से दिल्ली-NCR क्षेत्र के कुछ भाग भविष्य में धंसने की संभावना की बात कर रहा है। दोनों अध्ययनों को जोड़ कर अगर पढ़ा जाए तस्वीर का एक नया पहलू सामने आता है।

Biotoilets are biological toilets, named so because they convert human waste into non toxic, non contaminating water compatible with environmental standards, through application of multi strain bacteria culture, using aerobic forms of bacteria.

It is therefore crucial that we look after this resource and ensure that it is managed properly.Over reliance on groundwater for both domestic and commercial purposes has led to over-exploitation and contamination of groundwater. The Environmental Information System Centre, Department of Environment has prepared groundwater quality maps of Tamil Nadu. Water is considered to be hard when it contains high level of dissolved minerals. This may be of natural occurrence or due to human activities such as industrialisation leading to water pollution.

Ever wondered why there is so much fuss about groundwater getting scarce by the day and its quality deteriorating like never before ? And does the liquid and solid waste that my home releases into the environment everyday influence groundwater ? These questions and many more were answered in a recent training workshop organized by People’s Science Institute, Dehradun from 12th to 22nd December 2012. The training was conducted with the aim of promoting the integration of hydrogeology into mainstream watershed management with a focus on issues of equity, quality and sustainability. This was the third in this series of workshops organized by PSI after December 2011 and June 2012, with the focus on groundwater management in the Himalayan states of India.

What happens when two or more states are dependent on same water resource for agricultural purposes ? Do the states compete for the resource or are their needs sufficiently different from each other? What are the consequences of the competition for this precious resource?

This article sheds light on the dispute between Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, for sharing Cauvery river water. The ongoing tussle between the two states has seen a lot of unrest amongst farmers in  form of dharnas, protests, rail roko and non-cooperation by citizens, and disagreement with the agreements made by their respective governments and unending negotiations by governments involved, to come to a mutually agreeable decision.

The data is categorised into watershed wise (basin-wise) annual availability of groundwater, current draft (utilisation), allocation for domestic and industrial needs, availability for future use (or the balance) and categorisation based on stage of development and rigorous statistical treatment of water levels.
