Rainfall-runoff modeling for water availability in Ken river basin using SCS-CN model and remote sensing approach - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 29 Jun, 2010 10:41 AMThe report is the first of a two-part study on water availability for the Ken river system and attempts to evaluate the direct surface runoff in the smaller basins, where gauging sites are not available. In this study on water availability in Ken river basin, rainfall-runoff modeling in the Sonar, Bearma and Bebas river basins, which are the sub-basins of the Ken river system, have been carried out using the Soil Conservation Services Curve Number (SCS-CN) model.
This is a widely used hydrological model for calculating the runoff using rainfall and Curve Number (CN). The SCS-CN is a quantitative descriptor of the land use, land cover and soil complex characteristics of a watershed. The CN is an index that represents the watershed runoff potential.
Estimation of runoff from Bewas basin using SCS Curve Number method - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 29 Jun, 2010 10:10 AMIn the study, Soil Conservation Services Curve Number (SCS-CN) method is used to predict runoff volume from the Bewas basin at a dam site meant to augment municipal drinking water supply to Sagar city. The SCS-CN model involves relationship between land use, land cover, hydrologic soil class, and runoff Curve Number of hydrologic soil cover complex, which in turn is a function of soil type, land cover and antecedent moisture condition.
Study of recharge to groundwater due to monsoon rains using Tritium tagging in parts of Narsinghpur – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 28 Jun, 2010 04:48 PMThe study attempts to estimate the recharge to groundwater due to rainfall and irrigation using tritium tagging techniques in parts of Narsinghpur district under the Narmada catchment in Madhya Pradesh. The estimation of recharge to groundwater is crucial to better water resources management, particularly in arid and semi-arid regions.
Simulation of flood hydrograph using an event based rainfall-runoff model - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 25 Jun, 2010 12:00 AMThe study deals with flood estimation through computation of a flood hydrograph for the ungauged Narmada catchment upto Jamtara using the physical and geo-morphological characteristics of the catchment. The catchment area of 17100 sqkm has been sub-divided into five sub-catchments for the purpose of flood estimation.
Statistical analysis of rainfall in Sagar division - A research report by the National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 22 Jun, 2010 08:05 AMThe study seeks to understand the problem of rainfall, particularly for identification of any trend or persistence in the rainfall series in the five districts of Sagar division of Madhya Pradesh. A statistical analysis of the rainfall pattern is conducted using World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recommended statistical techniques for climatological analysis. Besides studying the statistical parameters and cross correlation, other techniques like linear regression and polynomial regression have been applied to identify the presence of any trend.

Brainstorming workshop on “Integrated Domestic Water Management in the arid and semi arid regions of India”, TARAgram, Orchha, MP
Posted on 17 May, 2010 09:33 AMVenue: TARAgram, Orchha Tigela, Orchha Dist. Tikamgarh – 472 246 (MP) (11 kms from Jhansi Railway station)
Description:
Development Alternatives (DA) is a research organization and it has a focus on innovation and policy outreach. DA is engaged in a research study sponsored by India Water Partnership (IWP) - “Knowledge Dialogue on Integrated Domestic Water Management-Preparation of Compendium and Status paper”. The overall objective of this study is to influence National Water Policy which governs the management of water resources in India with a view to incorporate aspects of Integrated Domestic Water Management (IDWM) in the semi arid and arid regions of India.
Developing markets for watershed services and improved livelihoods: Fair deals for watershed services in India - An IIED research paper
Posted on 07 May, 2010 10:51 PMThe report presents field experiences and lessons in developing Incentive-based Mechanisms (IBMs) for watershed protection services and improved livelihoods at micro and macro-scales, derived from an action-learning project in India at three locations in the states of Himachal Pradesh (HP) and Madhya Pradesh (MP).
An inter-village transaction was facilitated at one site (the Kuhan micro-catchment in HP), while at the second site (Suan micro-catchment in HP) a transaction failed to materialize despite initial interest. At the third site in MP, there was interest in undertaking a transaction between the city of Bhopal and the catchment of its lake, the Bhoj Wetlands.
The action research has yielded insights into the role of hydrological information, types of incentive mechanisms, the importance of institutions and the implementation of IBMs.
Rejuvenation of community toilets - A policy paper by UN-HABITAT and Government of Madhya Pradesh
Posted on 20 Apr, 2010 04:12 PMThe policy paper examines the condition of community toilet in terms of its infrastructure, operation & maintenance, uses and payment of user charges. The paper is a result of a joint collaboration between Water for Asian Cities (WAC) Programme of UN-HABITAT and the Directorate of Urban Administration & Development, Government of Madhya Pradesh.
In Madhya Pradesh, WAC is supporting Asian Development Bank-financed project in cities of Bhopal, Gwalior, Indore and Jabalpur to improve and expand urban water and sanitation services. This study has been taken up to monitor implementation of the water and sanitation related targets.
