जल गुणवत्ता जीवन के अस्तित्व का एक महत्वपूर्ण पहलू
जल प्रदूषण के लिए प्राथमिक कारण जल का अत्यधिक दोहन है जिसने जल प्रदूषण को काफी हद तक बढ़ाया है। पानी की गुणवत्ता संदूषण के विभिन्न कारणों से प्रभावित होती है, जिसमें शहरी और औद्योगिक अपशिष्टों की निकासी और खेतों से जल का बहना शामिल है नये अपशिष्ट पदार्थ इसी तरह जलमार्गों और झीलों में घुल जाते हैं। इस तरह के प्रदूषण मानव जीवन में प्राकृतिक तरीके से प्रवेश कर प्रभावित करते हैं और तब तक एकत्रित होते हैं जब तक कि वे खतरनाक स्तर तक नहीं पहुंच जाते जल प्रदूषण जलीय जीवों और कशेरुकियों की मृत्यु का भी कारण बनते हैं।

एनजीटी ने मसूरी झील के पानी के व्यावसायिक प्रयोग पर रोक लगा दी है साथ ही समिति को दो महीने के अंदर एक विस्तृतअनुपालन रिपोर्ट देने का भी निर्देश दिया है और अगली सुनवाई 3 अप्रैल को तय की गई है।

नेशनल ग्रीन ट्रिब्यूनल ने होटलों द्वारा मसूरी झील से अवैध रूप से पानी निकालने पर नाराजगी जताई है और उत्तराखंड प्रदूषण नियंत्रण बोर्ड (यूपीसीबी) और जिला मजिस्ट्रेट को टैंकरों के माध्यम से व्यावसायिक उपयोग के लिए झील के पानी की आपूर्ति बंद करने का आदेश दिया है। ग्रीन ट्रिब्यूनल ने पहले झील से पानी की अनियमित निकासी के प्रतिकूल प्रभाव का आकलन करने के लिए एक समिति का गठन किया था क्योंकि माना जा रहा
