खारे पानी को मीठे पानी में बदलने के लिए विलवणीकरण किया जाता है ताकि यह मानव खपत या सिंचाई के उपयुक्त बन सके। उन क्षेत्रों में जहां ताज़े पानी की उपलब्धता सीमित है, वहां सस्ते ढंग से ताजा पानी उपलब्ध कराने के लिए आजकल विलवणीकरण की प्रक्रिया पर विशेष रूप से ध्यान केंद्रित किया जा रहा है।

वर्तमान युग में एक ओर लोगों को साफ जल उपलब्ध नहीं हो पा रहा है तो दूसरी ओर जल से संबंधित समस्याएं लगातार बढ़ती जा रही हैं। जल संबंधी समस्याओं में सर्वप्रमुख है जल का खारापन, जिसके लिए अब विलवणीकरण या डिसेलिनेशन तकनीक का व्यापक प्रयोग किया जा रहा है। सरल भाषा में कहें तो विलवणीकरण उस प्रक्रिया को कहते हैं.
