बेहिसाब भूजल दोहन भूकंप के खतरे को विनाशकारी बना देगा। हाल फिलहाल के दो अध्ययन हमारे लिए खतरे का संकेत दे रहे हैं। एक अध्ययन पूर्वी हिमालयी क्षेत्र में भूकंप के आवृत्ति और तीब्रता बढ़ने की बात कर रहा है। तो दूसरा भूजल का अत्यधिक दोहन से दिल्ली-NCR क्षेत्र के कुछ भाग भविष्य में धंसने की संभावना की बात कर रहा है। दोनों अध्ययनों को जोड़ कर अगर पढ़ा जाए तस्वीर का एक नया पहलू सामने आता है।

In our country, more than 60 per cent of the irrigation requirements and 85 per cent of drinking water supplies are dependent on groundwater. The situation is aggravating as inadequate municipal water supply in rapidly growing urban areas have forced urban residents to rely increasingly on groundwater.

दिल्ली, मुम्बई, कोलकाता, बंगलुरु या कोई भी दूसरा बड़ा शहर हो पानी की बोतलों का कारोबार जमकर फल-फूल रहा है। कुछ दशक पहले तक बोतलबंद पानी का इस्तेमाल एक छोटा और अमीर कहलाने वाला तबका ही करता था या विदेश से आने वाले सैलानी पानी की बोतलें माँगते थे लेकिन अब शहरों में ही नहीं देहातों में भी सफर के दौरान या दुकानों पर पानी की बोतलें बहुत आराम से मिल जाती हैं
