Farmer’s willingness to pay for groundwater irrigation: The case of Uttar Pradesh
Is there a potential for introducing an organised groundwater irrigation market in Western Uttar Pradesh, where informal groundwater markets continue to thrive? Posted on 28 Sep, 2023 09:58 AM

Irrigated agriculture consumes the largest share of freshwater resources, including both surface water and groundwater. As high as 40 percent of irrigation is dependent on groundwater, accounting for 70 percent of the total groundwater extractions world over and this share is predicted to increase with climate change.

Nudging farmers to conserve water
Study investigates whether the package of both training and comparisons would be more effective than training alone to urge farmers to conserve water in a field experiment in Haryana. Posted on 25 Jul, 2023 10:07 PM

In a randomized field experiment, researchers test whether training medium scale farmers in an agricultural water reduction practice reduces water use from common aquifers in Haryana, India.

Micro-irrigation systems: Opening up new farming possibilities in India
There is a need to incentivize farmers to convert to more efficient methods of irrigation such as micro-irrigation Posted on 17 Jun, 2023 12:46 PM

Indian farmers have shifted from growing traditional crops to commercial crops with the help of modern technology and micro-irrigation systems. Farmers are increasingly implementing micro-irrigation systems to ensure precise water and nutrient delivery, which is essential for the success of these crops as agriculture shifts towards high-value crops.

Does micro irrigation really save water?
For achieving real water saving through micro irrigation, a mechanism for water regulation and allocation is essential Posted on 16 May, 2023 10:37 PM

Since the last few decades, the central government (and also multiple states) has been promoting micro irrigation (drip and sprinkler) under various schemes. These schemes mainly include National Mission on Micro Irrigation (NMMI), On Farm Water Management (OFWM), and now Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY).

Study suggests continuous monitoring of the water and soil quality in wastewater irrigated areas in Musi basin
Heavy metals, physical and biological parameters were analysed in water, soil, and crops in Musi River basin Posted on 25 Apr, 2023 05:01 PM

The large volume of wastewater remains untreated due to inadequate wastewater treatment facilities and the struggle to regulate it in many countries in the world. But it is being reused as a source of irrigation in urban and peri-urban areas.

Study reveals Indian dams to lose 26% water storage capacity by 2050
Annually, the globally averaged losses amount to approximately 0.36% of initial global storage capacity. Posted on 08 Feb, 2023 05:13 PM

Reservoir sedimentation is often seen as a site-specific process and is usually assessed at an individual reservoir level. At the same time, it takes place everywhere in the world. However, estimates of storage losses globally are largely lacking.

Union Budget 2023-24: A detailed analysis with a water lens
A detailed analysis of Union Budget 2023-24 from the water lens Posted on 03 Feb, 2023 11:51 AM

Having its domain in agriculture and allied activities, rural development, drinking water and sanitation, energy and transportation sector, water resources are quite crucial for an economy of a state. A union budget other than making financial provisions, also tells us about the vision of a government.
