Forwarded to the Portal by: Anu Maheshwari, SaciWATERs Image and Content courtesy: SaciWATERs The side session organized by SaciWATERs, the South Asia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Water Resources Studies, at the World Water Forum 5 called for generating visible demand for interdisciplinary studies on water in South Asia with a focus on creating a cadre of women water professionals to combat the 'masculinity' of current water sector. The side event titled Up-scaling IWRM Education in South Asia: Which boundaries to cross? was organized by SaciWATERs for the Crossing Boundaries Project in Feshane Lale Hall 5 at the World Water Forum 5, Istanbul, Turkey. The session evaluated the current status of water resources education, assess the demand for interdisciplinary water professionals and identify challenges, opportunities, and new initiatives in the realm of higher education for water resources in South Asia through the findings of the study titled "Strengthening IWRM Education in South Asia; Which Boundaries to Cross?". Prof. S Janakarajan, President, SaciWATERs, welcomed the panel members and the session speakers and briefly described the purpose of the Crossing Boundaries Project, an endeavour of SaciWATERs with six partner institutions in four South Asian countries, to bring a paradigm shift in water resources management education in South Asia. Dr. Peter Mollinga, Convener, SaciWATERs, initiated the session by briefing the participants on the objectives of the study which was to review the progress of the Project's initiative and to determine whether higher education system in South Asia was responding to the reforms generated by the Project.

The nonprofit landscape is changing very fast , are you keeping up?

Given this backdrop, a Joint -Venture by the United Nations mandated University for Peace and TARA Livelihood Academy a unit of Development Alternatives is offering a 1-day intensive professional development short course titled, 'Nonprofit Leadership: Maximizing Impact'. The course will be held on 27^th March, 2009 at Institute of Social Sciences, 8 Nelson Mandela Road, Vasant Kunj , New Delhi. The course fees is Rs 3,500/- which includes all course materials, lunch, tea/coffee breaks and the course certificate.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a tool with widespread use in development applications. The power of a GIS can have positive influence in community based planning and scientific decision-making for developmental activities. Commercial GIS softwares are not always an economical and easy-to-use option.

The Water Portal will be participating in an event at Madiwala Lake in Bangalore on Sunday March 22nd. The event will raise awareness about the benefits of Madiwala Lake and the problems facing the lake. A proposal will be made to construct a bicycle track around the lake which will have several benefits including reducing encroachment.

Dear Member Suchitra Film Society celebrates World Water Day with screenings of films on the theme of "Water"on 22nd and 23rd March 2009 at Suchitra Auditorium at 6.45 pm. As a part of World Water Day events, the Ministry of Water Resources is organizing a one-day workshop at New Delhi on 23rd March 2009. The program is as below.

The workshop notes are a record of the actual ground level experiences, understandings/misunderstandings and conversations regarding the floods in North Bihar.

In order to sensitise people towards health and hygiene, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED), Government of Bihar, WaterAid and UNICEF have taken up a month long Gram Gaurav Yatra to promote sanitation in Bihar. PHED Minister Ashwani Kumar Choubey announced the launch of Bihar Gram Gaurav Rath Yatra on January 28 that embarked on a Movement towards the noble mission of restoring human dignity and the self-esteem of rural Indians through the "GRAM GAURAV YATRA".

The International Conference on Water Resources Policy in South Asia was held in Colombo from December 17-20 at the Taj Samudra. The conference inauguration took off with a grand opening in the presence of 150 guests including special invitees from Sri Lanka. 

A two day National Workshop on need for policy and legal norms for allowing freshwater flows in Rivers in India on January 3-4, 2009 at Bangalore ended with a unanimous demand that governments must allow continuous, sustained freshwater flows in all perennial rivers of India, whenever, a dam, diversion or hydropower project is planned, constructed or operated. Inaugurating the workshop on the morning of January 3, 2009, Shri L C Jain, former member, planning commission of India (and many other important posts), expressed his pain and anguish on the state of India's Rivers, "It is very disturbing that the acts of commissions and omissions of the authorities have ruthlessly, blindly, heartlessly lead todestruction of almost every major rivers of India. The hearts of the officials and ministers should throb for the millions depending for their needs and livelihoods on the rivers, but it seems that the stones of the South and North block buildings have entered their hearts." Quoting Gandhiji's agenda for the economic independence of India from what he wrote in the Young India on November 29, 1929, Jain said, Land, Water and Air cannot be subject of commerce, but the planners lock up the pain, hunger, malnutrition in the paragraphs of their five year plan documents and do not ensure their inclusion in their actual plans and programmes. He expressed his deep anguish that even the recommendations of the official policies and committees on ensuring freshwater flows in the rivers remain unimplemented.
