Africa Water Atlas

This Atlas is a visual account of Africa's endowment and use of water resources, revealed through 224 maps and 104 satellite images as well as some 500 graphics and hundreds of compelling photos. However the Atlas is more than a collection of static maps and images accompanied by informative facts and figures: its visual elements vividly illustrate a succinct narrative describing and analyzing Africa's water issues and exemplifying them through the judicious use of case studies. It gathers information about water in Africa and its role in the economy and development, health, food security, transboundary cooperation, capacity building and environmental change into one comprehensive and accessible volume.

Starting January 2011, the "Dutch WASH Alliance" with its public and private sector partners, will execute a five-year programme focusing on water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) spanning 11 countries in Africa and Asia. The programme is co-financed by the Netherlands' Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Member organisations of the Dutch WASH Alliance are AKVO, AMREF Flying Doctors, ICCO, RAIN, SIMAVI and WASTE.

This report prepared by ICRISAT under its Global Theme on Agroecosystems deals with the problem of gully erosion, which is common in the semi-arid region, characterized by denuded landscape and flash floods. An estimated 4 million ha land in India and 29 million ha of land in Africa are affected by severe gully erosion. Gully erosion is more difficult and expensive to control than other types of soil erosion.
