Global Human Development Index declines for two years in a row: UN Report

Locally called Neeru, water of the Nilgiris in its springs and wetlands has been the fountainhead for two main rivers systems of South India. Today, with growing anthropogenic influences, there is a water crisis in the hills that needs our attention more than ever before.

A village of nine families bounded by a river on one side and thick forests on the other, lived here in Kilcoupe, an Irula hamlet in the Nilgiris. The women went out into the forest in search of water, a risky activity, as there was quite a large chance that they would encounter either a gaur or an elephant, sometimes even a leopard.

The Nilgiris have undergone an incredible amount of change in the last 10 years. Coonoor, an area well endowed with natural resources, is the second largest tourist destination here. However, over the last year (2012-13), the town has been reeling under a water crisis [1].

Introduction to the institute

Nilgiri Wildlife and Environment Association (NWEA) is conducting a Wildlife Census for Nilgiris North, Nilgiris South and Gudalur Forest Divisions from February 25 -27. This is a count for all mammals.

Over 100 volunteers are needed for this count which is simultaneously done in  three Forest divisions with support and guidance of the Forest Department.
