Background
Water is fast emerging as the key resource of the future. The demand for fresh water is growing at a tremendous pace, aided by a growing population and increased levels of industrialization. Discharge of untreated industrial and domestic waste water to existing fresh water bodies is another cause of concern, as it diminishes the availability of fresh water resources. Both the State and Central Governments have taken cognizance of this need to augment water availability, which is reflected in the growing investments in the water and sanitation sector.

This report by the Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) is based on the analysis of Multi-District Assessment of Water Safety (M-DAWS) carried out in 8 districts of Gujarat (Vadodara,Valsad, Mehsana, Gandhinagar, Kachchh, Surat, Ahmedabad and Dangs) , where ensuring adequate and safe drinking water to the people has been looked upon as a huge challenge needing urgent action during years 2007 and 2008 .
The Multi-District Assessment of Water Safety (M-DAWS) programme was undertaken by Water and Sanitation Management Organisation (WASMO) with financial and technical support from UNICEF.

Posted on 15 May, 2011 08:56 PMThe report by Institute for Resource Analysis and Policy (IRAP) and Society for Integrated Land and Water Management (SOFILWM) presents the findings of a research study undertaken in north Gujarat region, an area which has been undergoing significant changes in its farming systems as a result of several developmental interventions.
The study looked at a project initiated by IWMI and managed by SOFILWM in which water-efficient irrigation devices, water-efficient crops and land management practices were introduced among farmers in an effort to help them cut down groundwater use in irrigated agriculture without adversely affecting the economic prospects of farming.

The real ‘miracle growth’ in Gujarat’s agriculture appears to have occurred during the period from 1988 to 1998.
