Solar power project faces environmental backlash

Water scarcity is a significant global issue, particularly affecting arid and semi-arid regions. Climate change is expected to alter rainfall patterns and increase temperatures, threatening crop production and water resources.

May 2024 has shattered many global temperature records on land and in the oceans. It was no different, as parts of India recorded some of its harshest temperatures.

In recent years, there has been a notable trend towards overdependence on groundwater for irrigation in the Chikkaballapur district of Karnataka and the Annamayya district of Andhra Pradesh. The transformation in the region has been marked by a growing number of cases where farmers are drilling borewells as a response to the declining water table over the years.

The large volume of wastewater remains untreated due to inadequate wastewater treatment facilities and the struggle to regulate it in many countries in the world. But it is being reused as a source of irrigation in urban and peri-urban areas.

In recent years, the impact of the wastes discharged in the Bay of Bengal has been significant due to high effluent inflow from secured sources. It was observed that the heavy metal concentrations in the Bay coast sediments were considerately high and varied among sampling points.
