साल 2021 में एक अध्ययन से पता चला था कि दक्षिण लोनाक झील का आकार गंभीर रूप से बढ़ चुका है। इस अध्ययन में यह भी कहा गया था कि अब झील भारी बारिश जैसे चरम मौसम के प्रति संवेदनशील हो गयी है। अब क्योंकि हम यह अनुमान नहीं लगा सकते कि ग्लेशियर में बाढ़ कब आएगी, इसलिए ऐसी किसी बाढ़ के लिए तैयार रहना ही हमारे पास एकमात्र विकल्प है। जरूरत है उचित आपदा जोखिम न्यूनीकरण योजना और क्षति नियंत्रण की।

बीते हफ्ते, सिक्किम में दक्षिण लोनाक झील पर बहुत भारी बारिश हुई। इसके चलते झील के पानी ने अपना किनारा छोड़ दिया। सब कुछ इतना अचानक हुआ कि झील के पानी ने चुंगथांग बांध को तोड़ दिया। और इसके बाद तबाही का ऐसा दौर आया कि फिलहाल चालीस से ज़्यादा लोगों की मौत की खबर है, तमाम लोग गायब हैं, अनगिनत लोग चोटिल हैं, और  सिक्किम के कई हिस्सों में बाढ़ आ चुकी गई।
