बेहिसाब भूजल दोहन भूकंप के खतरे को विनाशकारी बना देगा। हाल फिलहाल के दो अध्ययन हमारे लिए खतरे का संकेत दे रहे हैं। एक अध्ययन पूर्वी हिमालयी क्षेत्र में भूकंप के आवृत्ति और तीब्रता बढ़ने की बात कर रहा है। तो दूसरा भूजल का अत्यधिक दोहन से दिल्ली-NCR क्षेत्र के कुछ भाग भविष्य में धंसने की संभावना की बात कर रहा है। दोनों अध्ययनों को जोड़ कर अगर पढ़ा जाए तस्वीर का एक नया पहलू सामने आता है।

Chitradurga district in Karnataka receives the lowest rainfall in the state. According to the Drought Monitoring Board, most borewells are dry and where there is water, its quality is poor. According to Chitradurga-based Devaraja Reddy who is a hydrogeologist,150-200 borewells were drilled in 2013, with an unfortunate success rate of 2%.

ACWADAM has embarked on strengthening Civil Society Capabilities in groundwater management, using the watershed management platform. As a part of this endeavor, ACWADAM has begun running a fifteen-day training programme on basic hydrogeology or groundwater science, for professionals from Civil Society Organisations or NGOs.

A decade ago, Jamwadi village in Yavatmal, Maharashtra, was a famous tourist attraction due to its beautiful lake. Now, there is no lake to speak of thanks to the Raymond factory in Yavatmal. Wastewaster from the factory flows untreated into the lake, which is located 15 kms away.

"The agricultural production in our region has deteriorated due to pollution. Haphazard mining has lead to serious drinking water problems in the area", says Indar Bilas Shah, a 56- year old resident of Obada village, Lakhanpur block in Jharsuguda, Odisha. He's not the only one. Thousands of villagers in Jharsuguda echo these sentiments.
