These guidelines by the Bureau of Indian Standards (1994) deal with the location, operation and maintenance of tube and borewells. Proper tubewell and borewell design, its construction and development considerably improves the long-term performance of the tubewell and reduces the chances of clogging of screen, sand content in water, contamination of water and other failures.

The Borewell FAQ, Part I & II, are meant to provide a primer on the basics related to all aspects of borewells. A well compiled document, it also give links to relevant queries and provides a much needed starting point for all those contemplating a borewell !

A sharing workshop on groundwater organised by ACWADAM (Advanced Center for Water Development and Management) in Pune on 21/22nd May 2009 saw some very good presentations being made. Dr Tushaar's Shah's keynote speech provided an amazing big picture of groundwater use in agriculture. The presentation can be viewed on slideshare and the entire speech is available on YouTube in 4 parts.

Mr. P. Ganesh of Ayyappa Aqua Solutions has invented a technique of lowering a camera with a flashlight down a borewell hole in order to understand what is going on inside. (Mr. Ganesh specializes in hydrofracturing which is a process of using high pressure water to crumble rock and open up fissures in order to rejuvenate borewells that have gone dry).

This paper on the GIS Development site discusses the findings of a  modeling exercise that was attempted in Lapasiya watershed, Hazaribagh, India.
