Arghyam, works in the water and sanitation sector since 2005. Our vision is “Safe, sustainable water for all”. The emphasis, of all that we do in Arghyam, is on equity and sustainability. Addressing the issues of the poor and the vulnerable in accessing water for their basic daily needs is a priority for us. Addressing these issues in a manner that is environmentally sustainable is important if the outcome is to be effective over time. We believe that the key to achieving this is in better water management which requires effective governance.

For a Better Manipur (FBM) and NECEER, Imphal are going to organise a photo exhibition cum contest in March 2012 at New Delhi. Photographers from different parts of the country and across the globe can participate in the photography competition by sending in their photos.

The increasing demand for fresh water due to ever growing population, calls for proper conservation and management of all the available fresh water resources, including lakes. Lakes need special attention as they are quite often the catalysts in the development of the region by supplying water for variety of uses such as drinking and civil water supply, industrial supply, irrigation, aqua-culture, recreation and tourism etc.

Almost 40% of the world’s poor are living in South Asia Region. Majority of the people depend on Agriculture.The sector is undergoing an irreparable loss through excess use of chemical fertilizer and pesticides imposed by the national governments through its green revolution technologies. It is characterized by mono-cropping, heavy use of external inputs such as chemical fertilizers, Pesticides,use of machinery and exploitation of irrigationresources, although GRT produced good results in the initial stages. Currently farmers are experiencing critical problems for continued production and productivity of crops due to Soil and water degradation.  Chemically used food products have lost the place in the Global market. Our much inherited ecology and bio-diversity is at a stake and getting endangered.

This manual is based on the work that PRIA was involved in that included facilitating the process of social development and monitoring, and for guiding the process of developing models for community monitoring linked to community action, for child survival and development in six project sites in India.

This manual is divided into three key sections:

It argues that among the water challenges in the 21st century, the water quality health nexus is one of the most serious challenges that will need to be addressed at an urgent level.The paper directs attention at the rapid and unequal growth and development patterns emerging in developing economies and the impact of this development on the environment and human populations. The paper directs attention to the negative impact of this development on one of the important natural resources such as water and the linkages between water quality and public health of populations.

This paper published in the Economic and Political Weekly argues that the transformation of human settlements over time can affect the relationship between communities and commons when, for example, social geographies change from rural to urban, or from traditional systems of management to modern bureaucratic systems.

Public Health Engineering Department, Government of West Bengal in collaboration with Ministry of Drinking water and sanitation, Government of India is organizing an “International Conference on Water Quality with Special reference to Arsenic” in Kolkata on February 18-19, 2012 followed by a field visit on February 20, 2012. The meeting is being supported by several International agencies like WHO, UNICEF, World Bank-WSP, UNU and others.
