Most of the ponds in Guwahati are in a sorry state now. They need to be preserved, not just as heritage sites, but also as drinking water providers and collectors of surface runoff.

Guwahati, one of the fastest growing cities in India, is thousands of years old. Once known as Pragjyotishpura or the city of eastern light, Guwahati has many ancient stories attached to it. This beautiful city finds mention in epics such as Ramayana, Mahabharata and the Puranas.

Not very far from Guwahati city but not too close either, perched on the gigantic Brahmaputra river, is the island of Umananda. It is the smallest inhabited river island in the world and is one with unusual stories beginning with even how it got its name.

Fight water-borne diseases before they happen
Diarrhoea, cholera and dysentery are often rampant after the monsoons. The state of Assam piloted a programme to teach people to prevent their occurrence rather than to treat the illness later.

The monsoon brings with it water-borne diseases like diarrhoea, cholera and dysentery, which cause suffering and death. Although this is a recurring theme annually, not enough measures are taken to prevent this. The state of Assam decided to take some action in May of this year.

About Aaranyak

Aaranyak (A Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation of India) is a frontline environmental organization of India based at Guwahati, Assam. It works all over the eastern Himalayan region on nature conservation, natural resources management, climate change, disaster management and livelihood enhancement of marginalized communities through research and advocacy.

Aaranyak wants to engage one ‘Research Assistant’ in a project on ‘Reducing flood risk by providing early warning and community based flood management planning in Eastern Brahmaputra basin, India’ being conducted under the supervision of Dr. Partha J. Das, Head, ‘Water, Climate and Hazard (WATCH) Programme’.
