Status of urban water supply, sanitation and solid waste management - CPHEEO data (2005)

This link on the Central Public Health and Environmental Engineering Organisation (CPHEEO) website, presents data related to the status of the urban water, sanitation and solid waste management in India. The data includes information on:

  • Status of water supply (physical)
  • Status of urban water supply (financial)
  • Status of urban sewerage/sanitation system
  • Status of low cost sanitation
  • Status of solid waste management

Data is included from different states in India namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Mizoram, Pondicherry, Sikkim and Tamilnadu respectively.

The data indicates that:

The state of water supply in the country is serious with water supply from majority of the states being exhausted and the existing water source being able to fulfill the needs of the population only upto a limited time. The situation seems to be better off in the Northeastern states and Pondicherry as compared to Karnataka, Gujarat and a few districts of TamilNadu.

In terms of coverage of sewerage disposal systems, Tamil Nadu (92%) and Karnataka (70%) fare much better than Maharashtra (40%), Sikkim (40%) and Pondicherry (25%), while the Northestern states seem to be worse off than the other states. Karnataka and Maharashtra are the states where disposal of sewage mainly takes place in the water bodies.

Mizoram and Tamil Nadu fare much better than Maharashtra and Karnataka in terms of the low cost sanitation situation. There is no data available for solid waste disposal for all the states except in the case of Tamil Nadu.
