Review of methods analyzing pump test data - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology

The methods of pump test analysis reviewed in this report has been classified as traditional, computer based and new graphical. Quantitative data on hydraulic characteristics of aquifers including transmissivity and storativity are essential to the understanding and solution of aquifer problems and the proper evaluation and utilization of groundwater resources.

In the traditional methods the techniques reviewed are Thiem method, Theis method, Chow method, Cooper and Jacob method and Theis recovery method.

In computer based methods the following are reviewed -

  • New automated techniques for the derivation of aquifer parameters
  • Application of microcomputer in the analysis of pump test data
  • Programmable hand calculator programs for pumping test analysis by least squares method
  • Methods of non linear regression analysis based on the principles of least squares
  • Analysis of pumping test data using Marquardt algorithm
  • Non-linear optimization method for the estimation of aquifer parameters

Under graphical category the methods reviewed are -

  • Alternate procedure for analyzing aquifer tests using the Theis non equilibrium solution
  • A simplified graphical solution of the Theis equation
  • New approach for analysis of aquifer test data
  • A new graphical method for identification of aquifer parameters
