वैज्ञानिकों का मानना है कि वर्ष 2100 तक तापमान में 1.4 से 5.8°C तक की वृद्धि के साथ समुद्र के स्तरों में 18-59 से.मी. तक की वृद्धि की संभावना है जिसके चलते तटवर्ती क्षेत्रों में जल प्लावन के कारण वर्ष 2050 तक 200 मिलियन लोग अपनी जगह से अलग हो जाएंगे।

सूखी ही बहने को मजबूर नदियाँ

दुनिया में ज्यादातर नदियां अपने तटवर्ती क्षेत्रों के लिए जीवनदायिनी रही हैं। यह भी कटु सत्य है कि सभ्यताओं का विकास ही नदियों के विलोपन का कारण भी बन रहा है। यह किसी से छुपा नहीं है, लेकिन विकास की अंधी दौड़ में आज नदियों का अस्तित्व खतरे में है। अस्तित्व पर प्रश्नचिन्ह का कारण, नदी से मिलने वाली रेत व जलराशि है।
