Arghyam is a non-profit foundation, based in Bangalore and focussing on water issues.
We are looking for a consultant who will work with us on creating decision-making tools for practitioners in the field of urban water. We are specifically looking at creating easy-to-use tools that administrators or engineers, especially in towns and smaller cities across the country, will find useful. This is part of our Integrated Urban Water Management project, where we are looking at interrelating the planning and management of all aspects of urban water (surface water, groundwater, wastewater and stormwater management, equity and access for the poor, institutional aspects, governance aspects etc.)
The work would be to:
Create decision-making tools that capture our learnings from our field projects in a format that can make them useful for practitioners. These tools will be in different areas of urban water management. Some of the tools we are envisaging include:
- A tool to create a rough water balance for a urban area that can give the administrator or engineer a quick approximation for the water balance for their urban area.
- A tool that can be used to create a water safety plan for an urban area
- A tool that can show the water utility the cost/benefit analysis of replacing old water pumps with new pumps of higher efficiency.
- A tool that will estimate the scope of groundwater in meeting the overall water needs of the urban community.
Other tasks would include visiting and contacting officials in towns and cities (mostly in Karnataka) in order to gather data and information needed to get a better understanding of the situation on the ground. Also to apply the tools being created to the town to test the validity of the tool.
Candidate requirements:
- Graduate or post-graduate in water resources, hydrology or related field.
- Atleast one or two years of experience in a water-related area. More experience would be a big plus.
- Excellent analytical skill. Ability to handle the scientific/mathematical calculations involved.
- Excellent oral and written communication in English.
- Knowledge of Kannada will be a plus.
Since we are looking at water in an integrated way we are looking for someone who can go beyond their area of specialization and can learn from and integrate information/knowledge from different aspects of water management into their work.
The role will offer an opportunity to work in a very cutting-edge area and absorb ideas related to all areas of management of water. You will get the opportunity to look at urban water first hand through the on-ground projects that we are implementing, and at the same time interact personally with many experts and learn from their work. The job would be an ideal match for a young professional who is looking to learn a lot and who wants to apply their technical and professional knowledge in a social sector context.
Compensation will depend on qualification and ability and will be competitive for the NGO sector.
The position will be based in Bangalore with some travel. We are looking for a full-time consultant and may consider a part-time position in exceptional cases. The duration is for 1 year with the possibility of extension.
