The workshop
Two important government programs have been announced by the Central government that will impact Chennai: the second phase of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM II) and the Rajiv Awas Yojana (RAY). Before these programs begin making large-scale investments in the city, we believe it is important to learn from the past. Since 2005, the first phase of the JNNURM has allocated more than Rs. 4970 crore for Chennai alone, and has been responsible for much of the new infrastructure in the city. What are these projects? How have they impacted residents, especially the city’s poor?
The workshop is designed to:
a) Understand and evaluate the impact of the first phase of the JNNURM in Chennai, with a focus on the urban poor
b) Learn about the planned JNNURM II and the RAY
c) Share strategies for how these new programs can be implemented in a more inclusive manner
The workshop will bring together local researchers, activists, residents of slums and informal settlements, concerned individuals, and informal sector workers, with researchers and experts from other cities, as well as government representatives.
