Background
Water is fast emerging as the key resource of the future. The demand for fresh water is growing at a tremendous pace, aided by a growing population and increased levels of industrialization. Discharge of untreated industrial and domestic waste water to existing fresh water bodies is another cause of concern, as it diminishes the availability of fresh water resources. Both the State and Central Governments have taken cognizance of this need to augment water availability, which is reflected in the growing investments in the water and sanitation sector.
However, arriving at effective water management solutions would require efforts beyond those made by Governments in augmenting water supply. Sustainable water management practices would require a concerted effort by the various stakeholders in the water sector, public sector and private sector as well as the end-user customer. Newer technologies that can make use of the inexhaustible sources of seawater by means of desalination or recycled industrial or domestic waste water are urgently needed. A critical element in the adoption of water solutions is the economics involved in implementing these solutions. Technological innovations around the world are now successfully bridging the gap between technological impact and economic feasibility. However, the knowledge available in this area is still scattered, and a platform to bring about a convergence of ideas is required.
The water situation presents an attractive opportunity for private players to step in and bring their financing capabilities and technological innovations to the water sector. The Government, on its part, has already started engaging the private sector with newer business models in the PPP space. A lot more work needs to be done to make this sector more conducive for private sector participation.
Thus, gaining a better understanding of the various business opportunities in the water sector and the type of partnerships that could succeed in this sector is critical to addressing the water challenges of the future. The Water Seminar and Gujarat Water Summit 2011 will address the role of technology and business innovations in enhancing water availability, quality and sustainability, covering a wide range of topics of interest to stakeholders in the industry. Leading industry players will also participate in an exclusive CEO Interactive Round Table: Partnerships for Sustainable Water Management”.
The theme of this year's summit is thus Partnerships for Sustainable Water Management. The focus will be on various water-related issues and the possible solutions to these issues. It will provide a platform for service providers to offer state-of-the-art technologies, products and services vis-a-vis rainwater harvesting, recycling of waste water, supply and distribution, ground water management, water treatment and filtration, sea water desalination etc. It will also provide a unique opportunity to bring all the stakeholders together i.e. the government, local municipal corporation, industry (sectors like chemicals, real estate, manufacturing, engineering, process, pharma, biotech etc.), academic and other institutions and consumer groups to discuss possible integrated solutions pertaining to water management. We invite all organisations, government and private institutions to actively participate in this international seminar and make it a success.
