Context:

Extreme vulnerabilities of the Indian Sub Continent provide a need for an organized information system for disaster response at District, State and National levels with a key integration of private sector companies with Government and other relief agencies. The Indian Ocean tsunami and the recurring natural disasters in India annually are illustrations when the need for a corporate data base of manufacturers, distributors and suppliers of essential humanitarian relief supplies in the public domain was found to be a critical gap. With the integration of technology and partnerships for Humanitarian needs at times of disaster the CDRN is an aggregation tool to consolidate and enable emergency needs and supply process for disasters. This is both in terms of pro active risk reduction and to manage response, relief and rehabilitation needs for continued awareness.

This aggregation of needs and supplies for times of disasters from both private sector and relief agencies provides further impetus to the ongoing needs for organised response. Attempting at the right information at the right time for the right people helps in collation of critical information for rapid and quantitative decision making for times of emergencies. Thus the need for a macro and micro management of information base to match the needs and supplies for inkind donation / supplies / volunteers.

Objectives of CDRN training for NGOs:

The principle objectives of the training program are:

  • To introduce the Corporate Disaster Resource Network (CDRN) to NGOs, Donors, Supplies and government bodies and familiarise participants with its application during disasters and also for providing real time information ofneeds to potential suppliers and donors for prepositioning needs before disasters.
  • To prepare the participants for the operational complexities of humanitarian aid such that they are able to contribute as effectively as possible to field response.
  • To create platform for exchange of ideas and sharing experiences on Disaster Supply Chain Management.

By the end of the training participants should be able to:

  • Use CDRN during disasters to post their needs/requirements in terms of both human resource and products required for relief as well as rehabilitation phase.
  • Use CDRN before disasters to pre position their requirements for skilled volunteers and products required.
  • Effectively coordinate with the private sector for needs fulfilment.
  • Highlight needs for potential donors to match with supplies/donations.

Methodology:

The training consists of structured learning exercises, case-studies and simulations. We favour a participatory approach and interaction among participants and organisers.
