About CHEA and the Indian Mountain Initiative

CHEA is a registered NGO and it operates out of Naintal, Uttarakhand. CHEA is one of the earliest societies founded in Northern India which had ' the environment and the livelihood of the people in the Himalayas ' as its core concern.

The Indian Mountain Initiative has been concieved as forum for the people of eleven Indian Mountain States, who presently have no mechanisms in place where all stakeholders could hold open and informed dialogues.

Meet of the Mountain States

There are two annual events organise to bring the stakeholders of the Indian Himalayan region to a common platform and discuss issues relevant to mountain region and the mountain people. The first event in a year is the Sustainable Mountain Development Summit (SMDS) organised in one of the 11 Himalayan states. This is followed by the second annual event of the Meet of Mountain States in New Delhi to share the findings and recommendations of the summit with the stakeholders based in New Delhi.

The second summit was jointly organised by ECOSS and CHEA in Gangtok (Sikkim) in May 2012 under the convenorship of Mr. P. D. Rai. The Summit # 3 is proposed at Kohima by the Sustainable Development Forum, Nagaland (SDFN) under the convenorship of Mr. Alemtemshi Jamir.

The proposed meet is being organised to mainly share
(i) SMD summit # 2 recommendations
(ii) IMI institutionalisation process, and
(iii) Introduction to the SMD Summit # 3 proposed in September in Nagaland.
