Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become a tool with widespread use in development applications. The power of a GIS can have positive influence in community based planning and scientific decision-making for developmental activities. Commercial GIS softwares are not always an economical and easy-to-use option. As an alternative, the open-source community has developed Quantum GIS (QGIS) which is a low-cost high quality GIS software. IIT Madras has developed a Gram Panchayat QGIS software that is intended to be used for village-level GIS mapping. A training programme for this is being held from April 8-12 2009. The training programme will include sessions at IIT Madras in Chennai, and field work in Chittoor district of Andhra Pradesh. Those interested in the training need to apply immediately, by writing to Nagesh Kolagani, (nagesh333@gmail.com). More information about the training is in the attached flyers: Page 1 Page 2
