About Aaranyak

Aaranyak is a frontline environmental organization of India based at Guwahati, Assam. It works all over the eastern Himalayan region on nature conservation, natural resources management, climate change, disaster management and livelihood enhancement of marginalized communities through research and advocacy.

Background

The International Centre for Integrated mountain Development (ICIMOD), founded by the eight Hindu Kush-Himalayan (HKH) countries of Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, China, India, Myanmar, Nepal and Pakistan and incorporated in Nepal under an Act of Parliament in the year 1983 as a regional research and development agency, has been working towards sustainable mountain development in the HKH region and its mission being to help promote the development of an environmentally and economically sound mountain ecosystem, contribute to sustainable management of water resources and flood risk reduction and to improve the living standards of mountain populations in the HKH region.

The Himalayan Climate Change Adaptation Programme (HICAP) is a pioneering collaboration among three organizations – CICERO (Center for International Climate and Environmental Research, Oslo , Norway), ICIMOD, and UNEP GRID-Arendal – aimed at contributing to enhanced resilience of mountain communities, particularly women, through improved understanding of vulnerabilities, opportunities, and potentials for adaptation.

HICAP will generate knowledge of climate change impacts on natural resources, ecosystem services, and the communities depending on them, contributing to policy and practice for enhanced adaptation. It is a 5-year programme for development of strategies and policies based on scientific evidence-based knowledge in the Hindukush Himalayas.

Aaranyak is implementing three projects of the HICAP in the Eastern Brahmaputra Basin, India in collaboration with ICIMOD. The proposed one and half day field level consultative workshop being organised jointly by Aaranyak and ICIMOD aims to identify key drivers of ecosystem change and state of ecosystem in the Eastern Brahmaputra River Basin, India considering examples from varied ecosystem areas of the region.

Workshop objectives

1. Share knowledge about state of ecosystems in Eastern Brahmaputra River Basin
2. Identify key drivers of ecosystem change in the region
3. Understand ecosystem livelihoods linkages

Expected outcome
