Use of GIS-based software for hydrological and water allocation modeling - Malaprabha river basin - Karnataka - Technical briefs from the India-PES collaborative project

The India-PES  initiative, was a collaborative effort undertaken on a pilot basis, by CISED and NIVA, for the development of integrated tools and consulting services for Watershed Management and 'Payments for Environmental Services' (PES) in India. Tools and methodologies developed as part of this initiative were tested in Malaprabha river basin, Karnataka, and the PES implementation was focussed on participatory irrigation management.

The aim of the PES India project was to assess feasibility criteria for schemes for payments for environmental services (PES), particularly watershed services (PWS). In order to test such feasibility criteria, the project carried out a number assessments on different issues regarding water supply services, water availability and water requirements at various water user sectors in the Malaprabha river basin. This included land use scenario analysis using hydrological and water allocation models; evaluation of water conservation measures by upstream landusers, and the legal and institutional feasibility of payments for watershed services schemes.

Evaluating the use of GIS software - DHI MIKE Basin, to optimize the water use in Malaprabha catchment area

This technical brief presents a report on the modelling of Malaprabha river basin. Modelling was done related to water users as irrigation and drinking water. Modelling results were used to identify optimal water allocation scenarios in the catchment.

Hydrologic modeling of the upper Malaprabha catchment using ArcView SWAT

This technical brief describes hydrological modelling of the upper Malaprabha catchment using SWAT. The modelling exercise was carried out to primarily estimate runoff from various land‐use types, crop water consumption, and the spatial distribution of water resources within the basin.
