Fluoride is one of the very few chemicals that has been shown to cause significant effects in people through drinking-water. Fluoride has beneficial effects on teeth at low concentrations in drinking-water, but excessive exposure to fluoride in drinking-water, or in combination with exposure to fluoride from other sources, can give rise to a number of adverse effects. These range from mild dental fluorosis to crippling skeletal fluorosis as the level and period of exposure increases
This document on fluoride contamination of drinking water published by the World Health Organisation is divided into the following sections:
1. Introduction
2. Environmental occurence, geochemistry and exposure
3. Human health effects
4. Guidelines and standards
5. Removal of excessive fluoride
6. Analytical methods
7. Country data on dental and skeletal fluorosis associated with exposure to fluoride through drinking water
