This handbook published by Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA) is an outcome of a project titled “Low Maintenance Wastewater Treatment Systems - LOMWATS; Development of Technologies and Dissemination Strategies.” The project had been financed by the Commission of the European Union, with substantial contribution by the State Office for Development Co-operation of the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen from October 1994 until April 1998.
This book aims at a target group, which is typical for decentralised technology implementation and consists of people who are aware of the general problem and know something about possible solutions. However, their knowledge is too general on one hand, or too specialised on the other to master very typical problems which go together with decentralisation.
This book provides enough basic knowledge about the technology to non-technical project managers in order to enable them to adapt this technology locally. The book aims to help the technical specialists to understand where technical simplification is required in order to disseminate the technology in its typical decentralised context - and provides tables for dimensioning of treatment plants on the computer.
The book also aims to assist senior development planners who need to understand the specifics of decentralised wastewater treatment technology sufficiently in order to select or approve appropriate strategies for its dissemination.
The handbook is divided into the following chapters:
1. Foreword
2. DEWATS: properties, performance and scope
3.Dissemination
4. Economics
5. Process of wastewater treatment
6. Ecology and self purification effect
