AQUA 2009 and Bhageerath awards in Goa

Forwarded to the Portal of Sangeeta Deogawanka============== The Mumbai Regional Centre of Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers (IIChE-MRC - Mumbai Regional Chapter) is organizing AQUA 2009 at Goa, on 4th & 5th July. It shall be a two-day seminar on Water and Wastewater Management with technical sessions featuring new technologies and product presentations. With AQUA 2009, the water and wastewater treatment industry gets another fillip. A technolgy-solution driven seminar with focus on the corporate sector, AQUA 2009 has drawn on the expertise of some of the renowned experts in the field of wastewater management. With participation of key professionals from the water and waste water treatment domain, AQUA 2009 aims at starting a new trend with a first of its kind BHAGEERATH AWARD . The focus is on techno savvy sustainable solutions that can serve the industrial and corporate needs of wastewater treatment and recycling. Starting with July 2009, AQUA shall evolve as a annual event showcasing the state-of-the-art and latest product and process know-hows suited to the Indian environment. AQUA 2009 The Vision There are currently a number of important international, government and judicial directives that will impact on the quality of water resources throughout India. These require a concerted effort and a large financial investment if the directives are to be adhered to. Although it could be argued that we already have in place the technical solutions necessary to deliver on the requirements of these directives, the energy costs of our traditional processes are increasingly under the spotlight and the likely impacts of these processes on CO2 emissions targets cannot be ignored. Finally there is an increasing requirement for all our environmental solutions to demonstrate that they are the most sustainable approach, in order to ensure that solution to one problem is not simply the cause of another that future generations will require to resolve. The Dilemma The above confronts the industry with two dilemmas; that it must make a huge financial investment to provide engineered solutions and that these must be delivered in an affordable and sustainable way. Should this involve the provision of innovative solutions or are existing processes adequate? In an accountancy-driven industry it might be argued that a period of consolidation with a better understanding of the performance and costs of existing assets is the most cost effective way forward. The present business climate perhaps lends more support to this cautious approach than it does to a research and development-driven industry that delivers efficiencies and cost savings through sustainable process innovation. Yet when considering the vast sums that will be invested, innovative solutions could generate significant savings both in capital and operating expenditure. So, the Aqua2009 theme is about understanding the existing asset base and identifying the needs for innovation. It will keep you abreast of engineering best practice, based around examples of successful case-studies, together with updates on the development of those innovative solutions that will be required, in order to deliver on the requirements of various directives. It will provide an opportunity to observe and discuss technical and policy issues; and make a path for the future. The Future Format The AQUA event will over the years become a resource development programme for sustainable water and waste water management issues, with Industry and Government participation. These events and workshops are intended to inform on current practice and highlight future policy directions. The Topics in the technology section are as follows and the participants will learn the latest technologies in the field of water and waste water treatment in the Industry: Topics and Speakers : Technology Selection - A Systematic Approach for an Industrial Wastewater Treatment Plan Satish Kamaraju P.E, Senior Manager, Weston Solutions India Private Ltd. THE BHAGEERATH AWARD As a part of this event we will also be launching the annual BHAGEERATH AWARD, to recognise excellence in the field of water and wastewater management. Three cash awards totaling Rs. 1.75 lakhs will be awarded on the basis of invited case studies. About 13 case studies are expected from leading corporate houses of the country, which will be evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges from academia and industry. The objective of the institution of Bhageerath award is to identify, monitor, encourage and recognize individual and group efforts to facilitate and foster best practices and increased participation in sustainable water and wastewater management. For you would agree that qualified success stories in developmental activities that care for the environment and utilize natural resources responsibly are essential in our work towards a healthy future. Companies participating in this competition have been given a directive to submit a case study based on significant work that they have carried out in water and wastewater management in different locations, as part of their academic, corporate or not-for-profit efforts. We have participation of case studies from Reliance, Sterlite, RCF, GSFC, Syngenta, Sudarshan Chemicals, Thirumalai Chemicals, Tata Chemicals, Kanoria Chemicals, GE and Vedanta.
