Private investment in groundwater irrigation: Do the public institutions matter? - The case of West Bengal
Posted on 01 Aug, 2010 01:34 AMThis paper by Centre for Studies in Social Sciences and Jadavpur University, aims at explaining the factors that determine private investment in groundwater irrigation in West Bengal. It also addresses the issues pertaining to institutional arrangements, particularly provision of facilities by the government. The study, largely empirical in nature, is based on data collected from surveys conducted in close to one thousand moujas (villages) spread across the major agro-climatic zones in West Bengal. It begins with a descriptive account of the changes in the agricultural scenario in West Bengal over the last thirty years. The research questions are discussed and the econometric methodology presented.
Groundwater table and hydrochemistry of Kakinada coastal aquifer– A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 28 Jul, 2010 03:05 PMThe report deals with groundwater table and hydrochemistry of the Kakinada coastal aquifer in East Godavari, Andhra Pradesh.
A sudy of the core of a riverine system and relevance of meltwater in river basin hydrology
Posted on 25 Jul, 2010 10:44 PMMy house is about 20 years old and is located in R T Nagar in Bangalore. In 1990, I had got a borewell dug. The Borewell is about 150 feet deep and has been giving me excellent quality water until about 2 years ago when I started noticing muddy water. The water that is pumped to an overhead tank contains fine particles of mud which tends to settle down in the overhead tank.
Groundwater quality studies in Belgaum district, Karnataka – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 23 Jul, 2010 08:40 PMThe report looks at groundwater quality and presents the results of the chemical analysis of groundwater samples from openwells & borewells of Belgaum district. The study broadly covers these aspects - (i) groundwater quality evaluation of the district (ii) identification of groundwater quality problems in various parts of district (iii) classification of groundwater, and (iv) application of DRASTIC model for assessing the vulnerability to groundwater pollution.
A study of saline freshwater interface phenomena in the Mahanadi delta region (Orissa)
Posted on 10 Jul, 2010 10:40 PMThe subsurface aquifer systems in Mahanadi delta region in Orissa (India) is largely characterized by two groups of freshwater aquifer systems, both of which are prone to saline water mixing/migration with time and development:
- The south western Mahanadi delta region is represented by unconfined to semi-confined freshwater aquifers underlained by brackish/saline aquifer systems with a diffusion boundary.
- The north eastern parts of Mahanadi delta is represented by deep freshwater confined aquifers overlained by brackish/saline water aquifers with aquitard/ aquiclude boundary.
A baseline survey of groundwater quality in coastal aquifers of Andhra Pradesh - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 10 Jul, 2010 01:09 PMThe study provides an analysis of groundwater quality to identify probable pollution or contamination in coastal aquifers of Kakinada in Andhra Pradesh. Sampling surveys have been conducted in the months of May 99, August 99 and November 99 and about 186 water samples were collected from shallow wells, filter points, canal water and rainwater. The spatial and temporal variations of water quality parameters are presented in the report.
Stream aquifer interaction in a multi-layered system – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 07 Jul, 2010 06:33 PMIn the present report a mathematical model has been developed for the study of stream aquifer interaction in multilayered system viz. a three-aquifer system, in which aquifers are separated by aquitards, considering varying stream-stage and vertical flow through aquitards. The model enables the computation of rates of recharge to the upper aquifer and exchanges of flow among aquifers along with the spatial and temporal distributions of piezometric heads in the aquifers.
Influence of fractured zone on seepage from a water body – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 06 Jul, 2010 11:47 PMThe present study is in continuance with the earlier investigations made regarding the seepage from a surface water body in a multilayered aquifer system, wherein the influence of varying dimensions of a fractured-zone in a aquitard on the seepage from a source had been investigated. The objective is to examine the influence of a fractured-zone in a confining aquitard on the seepage from a surface water body. The issues covered include the influence of –
- The location with respect to the source of a fracture in the aquitard
- The position of the fractured aquitard at various depths in the aquifer system on the seepage from the source
Effect of discontinuous aquitard on the seepage from a static water body - A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 01 Jul, 2010 03:46 PMIn this study, the influence of a discontinuous aquitard on the seepage from a recharge source in a multilayered aquifer system, with the prescribed hydrogeological set-up, has been subjected to investigation.
Conjunctive use studies in Pennar delta canal system: Aquifer response modeling – A research report by National Institute of Hydrology
Posted on 30 Jun, 2010 09:00 PMThe study on aquifer response modeling was undertaken for the southern channel command area of the Pennar delta canal system in Andhra Pradesh to understand the potential and dependability of groundwater supplies in the study area so that limited surface waters could be allocated to other uses or areas.
