Water conservation by Industry – A case study of Mahindra and Mahindra, Zaheerabad
Posted on 30 Apr, 2010 11:07 AMThe presentation deals with Mahindra and Mahindra’s (M&M) work on optimal utilization of groundwater resources in its vehicle manufacturing plant at Zaheerabad, Andhra Pradesh. M&M had taken help from ICRISAT and Groundwater Department of GoAP to study the hydro-geology and topography of the estate and prepare ground water maps.
A time bound master plan of water augmentation was worked out to undertake activities like rainwater harvesting pits, new locations for borewells/ openwells/ percolation tanks, planting of less water intensive trees, re-usage and re-cycling of wastewater, rainwater channels to recharge the under ground water reservoirs and installation of drip irrigation.

Its water saving projects are centered around re-use of treated water for reducing water consumption, Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) based effluent network system in residential areas, rainwater harvesting, installation of Cold Plasma Unit in place of wet scrubbers and installation of a jet spray system.

In particular, it discusses the clean technologies used in production such as –
- Reduction in steam consumption at PSF Plant and in CP (through use of Zimmer technology-based glycol ejector)
- Reduction of drift losses in cooling towers by replacement of eliminators
- Conversion of condensate to flash steam and its reuse in boilers

Posted on 28 Apr, 2010 08:20 PMThis brief by Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP) acknowledges that climate, water and agriculture are the three important factors that are facing severe crisis in recent years and argues that it is necessary to recognise that these three factors cannot be viewed in isolation, but as converging, interdependent and interconnected factors.
The convergence of these three factors means that solutions to the crisis cannot be found in isolation, but need to be complementary, that move away from dominant industrial agricultural models, to models that are sustainable and just.
2010 UN-Water Global Annual Assessment of Sanitation and Drinking-Water (GLAAS)

The objective of UN-Water GLAAS is to provide policy makers at all levels with a reliable, easily accessible, comprehensive and global analysis of the evidence to make informed decisions in sanitation and drinking-water.
With over 2.6 billion people living without access to improved sanitation facilities, and nearly 900 million people not receiving their drinking-water from improved water sources, UN-Water GLAAS highlights where efforts stagnate in achieving the Millennium Development Goal Target 7.C.¬ to halve, by 2015, the proportion of people without sustainable access to safe drinking-water and basic sanitation. It also highlights the post-2015 challenges that need to be addressed by the United Nations system to collectively support its Member States.

South Asia Rivers should be source of uniting people, not dividing them

New Delhi: A workshop organised yesterday on the sidelines of a South Asia civil society gathering under the banner of Assembly of a Union of South Asian Peoples at Jawaharlal Nehru University came up with a set of recommendations to address the question of conflict over shared rivers in the region. The key message from the meeting, which addressed issues pertaining to Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Bhutan, Nepal and India, was that South Asia’s rivers should be a source of uniting peoples, not dividing them. The Assembly is being organised as a civil society counter to the official SAARC meeting to be held in Thimpu from 28-29 April 2010.
Impact of electricity prices and volumetric water allocation on energy and groundwater demand management
Posted on 22 Apr, 2010 07:53 PMThis paper introduces a theoretical model to examine farmers’ response to changes in power tariff and water allocation regimes vis-a-vis energy and groundwater use. The author begins by explaining the context as one where the existing direct & indirect regulations and direct management interventions have been ineffective in arresting groundwater depletion. Also, there is an absolute paucity of sufficient empirical data to compare and analyze the differential impacts of different levels of pricing of electricity, and groundwater rights allocations on water and energy productivity.
The paper presents a review of farm sector pricing theories and thereafter analyses the potential impact of different modes of electricity pricing on productivity of groundwater use.
