Ganga water quality trend - A report by Central Pollution Control Board (2009)
Water quality of the Ganga as it passes through various states is presented in this document. Posted on 30 Apr, 2011 05:39 PM

The data has been collected over a period of many years from 39 water quality monitoring stations along the main river and 102 stations on its tributaries which were setup in 2008/09.

The study focuses on the parameters for dissolved oxygen, (DO), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and faecal coliforms (FC) as these indicate the biological health of the river. The period of study for the river Ganga is 1999-2008. The study finds that most of the water quality parameters studied do not meet the standards.

The Water and Sanitation Program has analysed secondary data on the Total Sanitation Campaign (TSC) available on government websites and conducted primary analysis in 22 sample districts spread across 21 states.

 With the use of secondary and primary data the report has not only been able to give a macro view of the TSC but also has been able to go into the nitty-gritty of the campaign. There are case studies of districts and villages that have achieved open defecation free status.

 A large number of farmers and well operators were interviewed in the process. Data was also collected from the power utility that supplies power to this region. Along with this the climatic peculiarities of the region, farmers and well users perceptions on ground water management and use were also collected.
