My house is about 20 years old and is located in R T Nagar in Bangalore. In 1990, I had got a borewell dug. The Borewell is about 150 feet deep and has been giving me excellent quality water until about 2 years ago when I started noticing muddy water. The water that is pumped to an overhead tank contains fine particles of mud which tends to settle down in the overhead tank.

The workshop will deal with both the issues of the accelerated use (rather abuse) of Natural Resources: Jal, Jungle, Jameen, Khaneej and beej (water, forest, land, minerals and seeds), on one hand and the deteriorating governance which are leading to further aggravation  leading to very adverse impact on the livelihood and health of the rural poor including the tribals and environment.

Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment (ATREE)’s small Grants Programme recognizes that there is a wealth of information and expertise at small scales that can be drawn upon for more effective conservation. Young Ecologists Talk & Interact (YETI) is a conference for students and researchers working in the discipline of ecology in India. This event is meant to serve as a friendly, inspiring platform for early-career ecologists to present and discuss their work, exchange ideas, and may be even strike up collaborations with contemporaries from all over the country.

The naturally undulating terrain of Bangalore city, with its hills and valleys, lends itself perfectly to the development of lakes that impound rainwater, store it for future use and ensure ground water recharge. Lakes are thus live ecological systems, and play a crucial role in the supporting life, including human.

Lakes in Bangalore were designed in cascades from higher to lower elevations; as a lake overflowed the excess water would flow into the next lake in the cascade. The flow of water is from North to South-east as well North to South-west along the natural gradient of the land.

The presentation from the ENVIS - CES (IISc) website, emphasises the important role that the tank system has played in the development of the city of Bangalore and highlights:

• The process of evolution of the tank system with respect to the growth of the city
