Water Policy in India

The water policies in post independence India has increasingly focused on harnessing of water resources on an unprecedented scale for irrigation, domestic use and non-agricultural activities. In last five decades about a sixth of the total public sector plan outlay was on water sector, which was spent on irrigation and flood control, rural and urban water supply schemes. Prof. A. Vaidyanathan gives a critique of the consequential impact of these policies on the water sector and also calls for reorientation of strategies in the water policy of the country
