This handbook prepared by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute has eight chapters:
Chapter 1 introduces the objectives and approaches adopted to prepare the handbook.
Chapter 2 includes community based and household treatment technologies for improving microbiological water quality and describes physical, chemical and physico-chemical methods.
Chapter 3, 4, 5 and 6 describe methods available for treatment of fluoride, arsenic, iron and nitrate along with treatment technologies implemented in various water quality affected habitations.
Chapter 7 spells out the methods and technologies available for reducing salinity in drinking water
Chapter 8 describes behavioural, motivational and community support aspects for sustainable operation and maintenance of drinking water treatment plants in rural areas.
The target audience for this handbook are engineers, chemists, public health and water resources professional having knowledge and experience about the fundamentals of drinking water related to health sciences and water engineering technology.
