Wastewater Reuse and Recycling

 This has been carried out through strengthening its water monitoring system by installation of water meters at source points, recycling of effluent of reject pit discharge to abandoned mine pit, zero effluent discharge by providing sedimentation tanks and re-utilisation of effluent. Apart from water, work was also done on reducing Greenhouse gas emissions.

This work that included domestic waste-water recycling, reduction in river water usage, and by close circuiting of process water.won the 

It has achieved this through the use of dry low NOx burners, air cooled condensers, rainwater harvesting through building a pond, improving recovery in its reverse osmosis water treatment process and by increasing the cycle of concentration in its auxiliary cooling tower.

This map provides the of levels of water pollution and groundwater depletion due to industrial activities in different parts of India. 

In this presentation Probhash Kumar Biswas and Tirthankar Sarkar of Jadavpur University, Kolkata have designed a rainwater harvesting and grey water recycling system to meet some of the water needs of the hostel block in Jadavpur University.

The Consortium for DEWATS Dissemination (CDD) Society is a not-for-profit organisation working in the field of decentralised basic need services across India. Decentralised solutions for wastewater treatment, water and energy supply, solid waste management and urban sanitation planning are successfully promoted for the past ten years.

CDD aims to create a knowledge base for up-scaling decentralised basic need services through its capacity building approach. CDD Society, in partnership with Bremen Overseas Research and Development Association (BORDA), Germany and Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Limited (RGRHCL) is organising a 6 days training programme on decentralised wastewater treatment systems (DEWATS) from 17^th August to 22^nd August, 2009 in Bangalore. The training aims to impart skills required for planning, implementing and managing DEWATS to the participants.

The presentation provides several water management measures including rainwater harvesting, grey water reuse, black water treatment and use and eco-sanitation in  Andaman and Nicobar islands. It also provides recommendations for modification in agricultural practices and other livelihoods that can be taken up with the given water availability.

The industry that currently does not treat or recycle any water. The treatment tank occupies less than 3 m2 floor area and the entire system costs less than Rs 1,00,000 to implement.
