Water distribution improvement "World Bank style" in K-East Ward Mumbai - A working paper by CASUMM
Privatisation of water supply scheme in K-east Mumbai Posted on 01 Aug, 2010 03:43 PM

In this document by CASUMM, the author raises important questions regarding the recent trends towards privatisation of water supply in Indian cities by discussing the case of the water supply scheme project in the K-east ward of Mumbai.

The privatisation of the water supply scheme, which has been implemented through grants by the World Bank (WB) raises serious questions regarding the intentions of the international organisations that fail to take into consideration the local context and the needs of the people and focus exclusively on profit making.

The slum water programme business plan: A sustainable water solution for marginalized slum communities - A document by ROWSThis document by Reach Out Water Solutions (ROWS) highlights the daily reality of people living in the slums of Mumbai and the inadequate water supply available to the 10 million slum residents to meet their daily requirements.

It presents a business plan, namely the Slum Water Programme (SWP) that proposes a comprehensive, community driven, decentralised programme to meet the water needs of the slum community.

The programme proposes to do this in three ways:

  • Firstly, by dealing with the problem of inadequate supply of water to the slum residents by the municipality, through increasing the availability of water
  • By providing improved quality of water through utilising water purification techniques
  • Improving access to water by making it available at the doorstep

Rainwater harvesting in Mumbai: Application of GIS
This article focusses attention on the increasing water demand in urban areas because of industrialisation and population growth by giving the example of Mumbai. Posted on 19 Apr, 2010 07:36 PM

This blog post by Prakash Apte, draws attention to the increasing water demand in urban areas because of industrialisation and population growth by giving the example of Mumbai and points at the current scenario of the lack of availability of adequate and safe water supply to meet the needs of the ever increasing population in the city.

The author proposes that rainwater harvesting can be a viable solution in cities such as Mumbai to meet this increasing demand for water and can provide an opportunity for equitable, efficient and sustainable use of water resources.

There is an urgent need for evolving a rainwater harvesting system that is sustainable, replicable and economically viable and argues that the benefits of using rainwater harvesting can lead to a range of social, economic and environmental benefits and can contribute substantially to improving the quality of life in Mumbai.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) has a role and application, in promoting a system and methodology for rain water harvesting and for providing the data needed to enable its large scale implementation in the context of Mumbai.

Jaltarang, a celebration of World Wetlands Day - An update from TERI's wetland management program in Navi Mumbai
The presentation is an update on the Khandeshwar Lake project in Navi Mumbai and includes details from the World Wetlands Day celebration organised on 2 February 2010. Posted on 11 Mar, 2010 10:45 PM

Jaltarang_TERI_WorldWetlandsDayThe satellite township of Navi Mumbai, with a total area of 344 km2, was developed in 1972 by CIDCO (City and Industrial Development Corporation) to de-congest the city of Mumbai. Initially a marshy land interspersed with villages, Navi Mumbai has been developed into a planned township, with much of its marshes and freshwater wetlands being converted into urban infrastructure.

Navi Mumbai is a rapidly developing twin city. In the course of development, it was realized that more emphasis needs to be given towards the preservation and sustainable management of the freshwater wetlands it harbours. Given the vulnerability of these wetlands and their resource potential, there is an urgent need to develop a framework for sustainable use of freshwater wetlands. This requires efficient management systems and development of sustainable models, which would help maintain the natural characteristics of wetlands while also exploiting its potential to meet the socio-economic and recreational needs of communities. To tackle this important aspect, TERI conceptualized a pilot project with active support of CIDCO in October 2008. The Khandeshwar Lake was chosen as a model to demonstrate the feasibility as a ‘sustainable wetland’.

The attached presentation is an update on the work taken up and impact achieved since the start of the project, and includes details from the World Wetlands Day celebration organised on 2 February 2010. Details of TERI's wetland management program are here.
