Despite making sanitation a national priority with Swachh Bharat Mission, 50 percent of India defecated in the open till 2014. The goal to make India open defecation free by 2019 seemed ambitious. The government provided funding but it also sought active participation from the corporate sector.

The School of Environmental & Earth Sciences, North Maharashtra University, Jalgaon works in the area of environmental awareness, resource conservation, geological explorations, field visits and social activities in the field of environment, geology and geography. It is recognized as a key resource centre by the Rural Water Supply & Sanitation Department of the Government of Maharashtra. Over a period of 10 years the School has emerged as a centre of quality teaching, research & extension activities in environmental & earth sciences. It has state of art equipments and facilities for research in identified thrust areas.

The various initiatives taken up include installing a water consumption measurement system, rainwater harvesting, using treated water, eliminating VAM chilled water overflow, diverting and reusing boiler blowdown water for gardening, providing side cover to barometric cooling tower, modifying water taps wit bell type arrangement, provision of sprinklers for gardenin
