A response to doubts raised by Prof. Yuan on Indian farmer's record paddy yield through SRI method in Bihar
It is to be hoped that people will not take seriously the rejection by Prof. Yuan of the high paddy yields reported from Darveshpura, achieved not just that by Sumant Kumar but also by four farmer-neighbors.

There is no scientific basis for rejecting these record yields in Bihar as a ‘hoax,’ because there is considerable evidence available that confirms the reported yields. Saying that the Indian government could not confirm the yield *after* the harvest is obviously correct, but it is a mistaken assertion.

NIAR organised a two-day conference on 'Decentralized governance in water and sanitation in rural India' at  LBSNAA, Mussoorie, in June 2012. This seminar aimed to provide a platform for the effective sharing of experiences of PRI-implemented WATSAN service delivery programmes  and so understand the various factors affecting the effective decentralisation of water and sanitation. The discussions during the latter two themes are presented below.

Sustainable development depends on an equitable distribution of resources for today and for the future. It cannot be achieved without gender equality. Women’s empowerment is a key factor for achieving sustainable economic growth, social development and environmental sustainability.
New water policy more contentious; least helpful in tackling existing issues
The new water policy (NWP) draft 2012 is reportedly replete with more contentious issues and least helpful in tackling existing issues. The formulation of new draft policy has been facilitated in an undemocratic way sans participation of all stakeholders. Undoubtedly the draft explicitly states that water needs to be managed as a community resource held by the state under public trust doctrine, but concurrently it underscores the need to treat water as an “economic good”. Instead of treating water as ‘economic good’, it should be treated as sustainable development instrument.
