Whose wastewater is it?

While many states in India are forming policies promoting the reuse of wastewater, the policy framework does not pay adequate attention to existing rural users of wastewater.

Wastewater is not considered different from freshwater in recent years and is often termed as 'used water' or 'return flow' that can be reused. This realisation of the advantages of wastewater has led many states to devise policy measures that prescribe wastewater allocations for various users.

Vidarbha region in Maharashtra has continued to be in the news over the years because of its severe agrarian crisis with reports of severe droughts, loss of crops and increasing farmer suicides. Relief packages have done very little to solve these problems.
